How Nick Saban’s influence led Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin to Alabama transfer corner Trey Amos…

OXFORD — Ole Miss football made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Trey Amos, a cornerback.

After three successful seasons in the Sun Belt at Louisiana, Amos headed to Alabama, where the Rebels lost last offseason. After the 2023 season, Amos went back through the transfer portal, but this time, defensive coordinator Pete Golding and coach Lane Kiffin weren’t going to let him swing and miss.

Amos remarked, “Pete Golding, we had a lot of talks,” during his first press conference since his move on Tuesday. He would constantly criticize me, saying that I ought to have chosen Ole Miss first. We make jokes about that all the time.”

From one angle, the Rebels’ failure to fulfill Amos’s vow from the previous year won’t be seen as a total catastrophe. Under the careful supervision of Nick Saban, who always took a hands-on approach to teaching his defensive backs, he spent 2023.

Kiffin and Golding, both former Saban coaches, were certain they understood what they were getting in the 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of New Iberia, Louisiana, when Amos became available for the second time.

“You know, obviously, that they’ve been coached really well,” Kiffin stated. You are aware of their thinking, though. It matters a lot that a participant in your program has been trained with an elite attitude as opposed to someone from somewhere else, for whom you must break them of a different perspective.”

According to Amos, the reason he decided to reopen the gateway was because of the uncertainty surrounding Saban’s retirement. He notes that playing press-man coverage is his strong suit and that the Rebels will need him to do a lot of it this season.
