Kaizer Chiefs’ transfer targets: Two key positions remain on wishlist
Kaizer Chiefs’ transfer targets revealed as two key positions remain on the wishlist, as per Kick Off.
Chiefs’ management has already made significant strides in the transfer market, securing five new signings to bolster the squad under new head coach Nasreddine Nabi. The club has addressed several key areas, including defence and attack, but now focuses on filling two remaining positions on Nabi’s wishlist.
They have reinforced their backline by bringing in centre-backs Rushwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel, added a third goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, to replace the departing Itumeleng Khune, and secured attacking experience with former Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino.
However, Nabi’s attention now turns to finding a left-back and a striker before the season begins. The left-back position, in particular, has been a persistent issue for Chiefs. S’fiso Hlanti, at 34 years old, has often been overused, while Happy Mashiane’s conversion from winger to left-back proved ineffective. The team has also struggled with using right-footed Reeve Frosler on the left side.
Injury concerns and transfer targets for left-back
The recent signing of Bongani Sam, a former Orlando Pirates left-back, was a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, Sam suffered an injury during the pre-season tour in Turkey, alongside Edmilson Dove, highlighting the urgent need for additional left-back options.
Chiefs have targeted Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien but have had two offers for him rejected. Reports suggest interest in AmaZulu FC left-back Riaan Hanamub, though this move appears unlikely.
Striker search: Chiefs struggle to find the right fit
In terms of the striker position, Chiefs have faced challenges in recent years. Ashley Du Preez’s return of 15 goals in 59 appearances over the last two seasons is the highest tally among their attackers. Chiefs have explored options including Bafana Bafana forwards Luther Sigh and Lebo Mothiba but could not reach agreements, and both players have joined other clubs.
The club’s latest target, Fiston Mayele from Pyramids FC, saw an offer turned down by the Egyptian club. Chiefs also showed interest in Young Africans’ Clement Mzize, who scored against them in a pre-season clash.
With the transfer window closing on 20 September, Kaizer Chiefs have just under a month to finalise their signings and address the critical positions of left-back and striker to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
