Eddie Howe believes ‘very few’ players in the world can match ‘technical’ Newcastle star
While Eddie Howe would no doubt like to bring more players into Newcastle during what remains of the summer transfer window, there are areas of the squad in which the manager is blessed.
Indeed, Tino Livramento has been praised by Howe, with pundits such as Martin Keown suggesting the full-back has been held back in his development long enough.
Clearly, the 21-year-old represents the future for Newcastle, although he has some competition for a starting berth.
Kieran Trippier may have struggled at times last season and is reportedly facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park but, while he’s still here, provides a high-quality back-up.
Eddie Howe says very few full-backs can match Kieran Trippier for quality
Not only did Howe confirm he was “desperate” to keep Trippier this summer but the Newcastle boss suggested there were “very few” full-backs in world football who can match the England star for technical quality.
“I think you could see his experience and his technical quality which I know we talk about a lot,” he said (via The Chronicle).
“There are very few full-backs with his ball playing ability and his crossing ability and his set play delivery.
“He really helped us today. He calmed things down and used his experience. He gave us a renewed threat with Anthony down our right hand side. I love Kieran as a footballer and always have. I have managed him twice and I am very lucky to do so. I am desperate to keep him.”
Newcastle are in an interesting position with Kieran Trippier
There would be some logic in selling Trippier from a purely financial sense. He, after all, admitted his form had dipped last season and, at 33, he is obviously in the autumn on his career.
The veteran actually replaced Livramento for the draw at Bournemouth and helped get Howe’s side back into the game, with the Newcastle boss praising Trippier after the action.
So, raising funds would be wise when look through a purely financial lens.
However, that doesn’t mean letting Trippier wouldn’t weaken the squad. The likes of Paul Merson have suggested any club would be fortunate to have him and clearly Howe still holds him in high regard.
It will be fascinating to see what becomes of Trippier between now and the end of the window.
