TUSCALOOSA, Alabama—On Friday, Director of Athletics Greg Byrne announced the appointment of Kalen DeBoer as the new football coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. DeBoer is the 2023 Associated Press, AFCA, Eddie Robinson, George Munger, Walter Camp, and Home Depot Coach of the Year winner. DeBoer comes to Tuscaloosa following two seasons of play with Washington.

\DeBoer spent two seasons at Fresno State, where he went 12-6 and guided the Bulldogs to the 2021 New Mexico Bowl, before taking over at Washington. His first position as head coach was at the University of Sioux Falls, where he was employed from 2005 to 2009 for five seasons. During that time, the team went 67-3, won three NAIA national titles, and was named Coach of the Year three times.

Michael Penix Jr., the 2023 Maxwell Award winner, and the offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award this season were both coached by DeBoer. He produced 25 first team All-Americans and three NAIA National Player of the Year winners at Sioux Falls, including running back Nick Kortan (2002), quarterbacks Lorenzo Brown (2009), and quarterback Chad Cavender (2007).

After graduating from Sioux Falls in 1998 with a secondary education degree, DeBoer achieved numerous records as a student-athlete in baseball and football. In his football career, he participated in the 1996 NAIA Division II National Championship squad and recorded 3,400 yards and 33 touchdowns on 234 career receptions, all of which at the time were school records. He also played baseball for the Cougars, setting a school record as a senior with a batting average of.520.
