2024 Suns Player Review: A disheartening sweep concludes Devin Booker’s turbulent, uneven season

Welcome to our Phoenix Suns Season in Review series, in which we examine each player who made a significant impact during the 2023–24 season in-depth. We examine each player on the roster to determine what went well, poorly, and what they may improve upon for the upcoming campaign.

The way that Booker and the Phoenix Suns were swept by Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves called into doubt Book’s status as the best two-guard. Edwards hasn’t yet achieved Booker’s four-time All-Star and one-time All-NBA distinction, but he has swept the Suns and is currently crushing the Denver Nuggets, the reigning champions.

In November 2018, during his third season with the Phoenix Suns at the bottom of the Western Conference, Booker boldly said that he would be approached by a superteam. Book’s fantasy came true when Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant teamed together to become the Suns’ “Big 3.”

Being a few years older than him, Beal added, “it’s crazy to watch his growth, just to see the caliber-level player he is.”

“It can only just get better, and that’s kind of scary to say. I’m excited to see that, because I’m going to continue to push him and push him and push him and push him until he can reach that level we know he can tap into, and whatever that is, because he can still be better. He can still grow, he can still improve just like I can, just like everybody can. But I think his sky is unlimited, honestly. And I think he’s just now scratching the surface, and people really waking up and respecting his game and understanding he can carry a team.”

Booker had a difficult journey to become a basketball superstar and one of the finest players in the league. According to former Sun Tyson Chandler, the youthful Book rapidly established himself as the team’s top player as the Suns experienced difficult seasons.

Chandler recalled that later, Ryan McDonough, the general manager, asked, “What do you think?,” in the podcast “All the Smoke.” “I promised to be honest with you,” I said. Devin Booker, the player you drafted, is the greatest one you have on your team. And he thought, “What?” Really? How do you feel about Knight and Bledsoe? I thought, ‘They’re decent. I am informing you. He’s better than all of us, myself, them, and this roster. The best player on this roster is that one.
